WEEK1-CC1: Desktop Music Environment
I have been working with digital audio on the PC for quite awhile so I found it great to put names to some of the software and environments I have been using. It helped to define things by taking it from the ground up. I found the session helped draw some boxes and circles around various areas of software and hardware like DME's and API's. I guess I have been pretty ad hoc and just learnt enough to make my machines create what I needed them to without going to deeply into what things were called!
I doodled about with the setup in Studio 5 for about an hour and a half, which was great (apologies again to those two guys about the mix up with the booking times). The AMS makes patching things together a breeze compared to anything I have used before, but an hour and a half was only enough time to begin to familiarise myself with the mac osx and have a bit of a play.
I checked each piece of hardware with its corresponding icon in the AMS and flicked a few virtual cables around. I got down behind the hardware with my pocket torch and tried to figure how it was all physically patched together. The more familiar you became with this setup, I guess the more scope for creativity and imagination you would have. I'm growing fond of Studio 5! (As Freddy would say, warm and cosy ... )
I am keen to get into the lab with some other students and play around with the possibilities of distributed musical networks. I have done some reading and research on creating them and it will be fun (and possibly frustrating) to experiment.
