WEEK 9 - CC1: Processing (3)

I began this week by recording a human version of the Marshall McLuhan quote (1) onto a track in ProTools (2) and used Tab to Transient to dice up my file. I created a second track, named and numbered each newly created region in track one and dragged a copy of each region to track 2, leaving a small gap between each of the 26 regions. I deleted the contents of track 1, renamed it 'Workspace' and moved the first new region from track two in to work on. I then created a third track to store decent results.

This wasn't the most efficient way to administrate this process and keep all the files in order. I realised I should select only promising regions and bounce to a folder for quality samples. I then tried the gating example, although the settings were a little different on my rig, achieving mixed results.

I created samples over the next couple of days, developing a feel for the software and possibilities. One of the many things I tried was the reverse and delay routine re: Thursday's tutorial (3). I then snipped a third from the middle of the sample, reversed it and consolidated it back with the other two regions. I tried a zillion ways of going about gathering my samples, and learnt about ProTools and some neat editing techniques on the way.

After harvesting, I loaded my samples into the NN19 (4); tweaked the root keys and key zones, trashed a sample, loaded a replacement. A blend of (most) of the effects I'd come up with. I found myself 'tuning' keyzones as a character developed.

I got the gating setup working eventually, but alas, too late. As usual, so many possibilities, so little time to explore. Not quite the right blend of samples yet but getting there and I learnt lots. Results not astonishing but pleasing enough. I feel the technical and creative elements didn't quite gel for me this week.
