WEEK 12 – AA1: Mixing Experiments 2 (or On the Busses)
For the next take, I worked from what I had and added 2 more Aux faders, one to group bass and kick on a compressor and one for the 2 acoustic guitar tracks with an eq. I put i/o settings in each track and played around with faders. Bumbling along but getting there! Not sure about order of processing. Sure Stephen mentioned (2) it and I wrote it down, but can't find in notes. EQ, compression first - reverb, delay etc second?
Nothing flash this week. A serious head cold has got a hold, but I have been experimenting with the bus setups in ProTools (1) during the week before I made these takes. For the first take, I grouped two vocal tracks and created a stereo aux track. I inserted a comp/limiter on the aux track and after some fiddling about, worked out how to set up the busses and input/outputs. Think I had it right. Set up the output of the vox track to bus 1-2 stereo, io set to main Analogue stereo out 1-2. I seemed to be able to get a wet and dry sound but still not sure what is happening. Further investigation required. Added a reverb to see if that would work too. It did but couldn't figure way of adjusting amounts for plugins individually.
Last of all, I added some simple automation and tweaked a little more. Have a listen and see if you can guess …
Did you hear it? Stu Verse and Piano.VS swing left to right in opposite directions.
The aux settings/plug-ins I ended up with were:
Master Fader – Dither, Bomb Factory Compressor BF76 (3)
Bass and kick - Bomb Factory Compressor BF76
Guitar - 7 Band eq (4)
Vox - D-verb (5)
I have learnt a heap about Pro Tools this week as I've experimented, then my assessment recording on Saturday topped things off. Now to post this and find the tissues.
