Luke: Merce Cunningham collaboration with Radiohead & Sigur Ros
Without seeing footage of the event, it was hard to judge whether the collaboration worked. Costumes looked good and the sound was interesting, but the success of the realisation was dependent on witnessing it in a linear fashion – seeing the dancers movements interacting with the musicians sonic ideas. Dancers and musicians acting and reacting to each others language in time. Is Merce the dance equivalent alter-ego of John Cage?

Okay, so Mike’s collaborated with a gazillian folk, and stylistically, it does vary a bit – but does he really vary that much vocally? I like Faith No More and Mr Bungle, appreciate and respect where they’re coming from. But for something different from Mike, I would have liked to have heard some Peeping Tom – the pop band. The live setup with a wet and dry mic is a great creative tool. Interesting.
Alfred: Collaborate on Demand – Vinyl Rights!
Alfred raises some points that make me think, 'Mandelbrot set'. Where is the line when it comes to sampling and intellectual property? Through our studies, we have been taught how to warp a sound into something unrelated to the original, unrecognisable as the original, if we care to. Does that ‘third party’ sound entity then belong to anyone, and should anyone be getting credit, financial or otherwise, for creating the source material for what is now the product of an indirect collaboration? Unwanted and unsolicited credit, perhaps (as I think someone mentioned)? The originator may be flattered someone's cared to mangle their original and give them some credit. Or insulted someone should use any source material without prior permission. But being unrecognizable, an offspring of the original, does it matter? Vinyl containing excerpts of other vinyl excerpts, etc …
